Maui Economic Opportunity improves the lives of Maui County residents and community as a whole

For more than five decades, Maui Economic Opportunity (MEO) has been assisting residents in need in Maui County. Their mission: to strengthen the community while helping people in need restore their hope, reach their potential and enrich their lives.

MEO is a nonprofit, established in 1965, as part of the nationwide Community Action Network to tackle poverty in communities. The agency's goal is to improve the lives of Maui County residents and the community as a whole.

With more than 40 programs and 200 employees, MEO assists low income residents, kupuna, youth and persons with disabilities. Programs include Head Start preschool; Paratransit (Maui Bus ADA service) and Human Services transport (i.e. residents to doctor's appointments and dialysis, youth to sporting events and workers to their jobs); rental, water and utility assistance; help for recently released inmates; employment services; small business training, microloans and grants; after-school and in-school drinking, smoking, drugs, bullying and suicide prevention.

MEO provides a safety net for low income residents, persons with disabilities, kupuna and Maui County residents in need. Services provide emergency assistance, such as when power is about to be shut off, and help getting back on firm economic footing with training, clothes and tools, transportation. MEO supports kupuna, youth and families through the Maui Planning and Coordinating Council, Head Start and Youth Services programs.

MEO also works to help businesses unable to obtain conventional loans and offers training for entrepreneurs.
